A Tranny, A Basquiat, And A Taco Truck.
I cannot believe that I am still alive after this weekend.
This past Saturday, we piled into the Bodega-mobile and shot down to the Big Apple to make some Lo-Fi Hedonistic history. Our first stop was the art gallery/salon/hippie commune known as Collective Hardware to do the cover shoot for the next issue of Beyond Race Magazine. Yeah, that’s right…we got the COVER, son! I had to admit, drinking Presidentes and Pacificos next to a $3 Million Basquiat painting was a tad intimidating, but we did our best to keep our cool. Collective Hardware is kind of surreal in that way, one moment you are staring at Warhol painting, the next moment you are acquiring “party goodies” in the same room as actor Josh Lucas. The photo shoot was hot, mostly because Miss Carmen was wearing a 1980’s exercise outfit similar to Olivia Newton John in the “Physical” video . Beyond Race are great people who are always down to let Bodega Girls do anything we want, including get a quick band photo next to one of the most handsome homeless men in New York (see above photo).Keep your eyes peeled for the next issue of Beyond Race (coming in December) featuring our mugs on the cover. Word!
After wrapping up this paparazzi fest, we made our way to Williamsburg where everyone was wearing hammer pants and eating Veggie tacos out of the Endless Summer taco truck. Our show was at Cameo/Lovin’ Cup with two GREAT bands, Mystery Roar and Wallpaper. The show was sweatier than Robin Williams’ 80’s stand-up, and everybody was super pumped on what the Bodega Girls were giving out. Brooklyn loves to give us love. The rest of the show was incredible. Mystery Roar are synth-funk wizards and Wallpaper covered “Poison” by Bell Biv Devoe…’nuff said.
After one the best shows we’ve played in a long time, we met up with The FTW! posse at Home Sweet Home in the Lower East Side. This bar is my favorite bar in New York. Mac and I decided that the best thing to do in that environment was to get shirtless and pour Budweisers all over ourselves and everyone who was unfortunate enough to be our vicinity. After a few hours of that, we rolled into some fancy velvet rope club where the DJ was a 6′8” tranny and the drinks were so expensive that they should have come with financial aid. I guess I should have not ordered the golden dinosaur egg martini.
New York is still, indeed, the city that NEVER sleeps…and I am pretty sure that Bodega Girls is the band that hardly does either. We will be playing the hell out of New York during the week of CMJ (see dates below). Until then, please check out Paul Proulx’s NEW version of “She’s Into Black Guys”. I am going back to bed.
